Cervical Screening (Smear Tests): What You Need to Know

Did you know that fewer than 80% of people who need cervical screening are keeping up to date with their tests?

Anyone with a cervix aged 25 to 64 should be invited for cervical screening (a smear test).

Cervical screening isn’t a test for cancer. It’s a test to help prevent cancer by checking the health of your cervix (the opening to your womb from the vagina).

The sample is sent to a lab to look for “high-risk” types of human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV can sometimes cause changes in the cells of the cervix, which could turn into cancer in the future if left untreated.

Your comfort matters. Everyone’s body is unique, and there’s no need to feel embarrassed. Healthcare professionals do this every day and will always treat you with respect.

If you’d prefer a chaperone or have any worries about the test, please let us know — we’re here to support you.
