Clinics are held regularly to monitor your illness and offer advice and support.

Contraception & family planning

Doctors are keen to give contraceptive advice  . All consultations are confidential, regardless of age.


If you need emergency contraception, telephone the surgery and ask for an appointment with the nurse or doctor.


Dr Farey offers coil fits and Dr Lewis/Dr Giles offer contraceptive implants, by appointment.

District Nurses

If you are housebound and require nursing care, the District Nurses will visit you at home.  This team is based in Knowle.


Domestic Violence & Abuse Support Services

The staff in the practice are trained about domestic abuse and specialist workers are available to support you.  Birchwood Medical Practice is an ‘IRIS’ practice.  You can talk to doctors, nurses and other staff working here if you are being hurt or controlled by your current or ex-partner, are afraid of someone at home or a member of your family.  You can also contact Next Link and ask to speak to the IRIS worker, ‘IRIS Advocate Educator’.


Drug and Alcohol Services

Specialist drug and alcohol services can be accessed through the surgery.

Members of the practice follow the South Bristol Methadone Prescribing protocol. All patients receiving methadone on prescription must see a drugs worker.


All consultations are confidential.


It is important to keep up to date with your immunisations to avoid serious illnesses. You can go to the treatment room or come to one of these clinics.
  • Childhood illnessess: we will invite you to bring your child to attend when they reach the age for their immunisation.
  • Flu jabs: we will invite you to attend for a flu immunisation if you are aged over 65 or have an illness that would be made worse if you caught flu; or where there is a government scheme targeting a specific patient population
  • Travel: if you are going abroad, you can arrange an appointment with a Treatment Room Nurse for advice on any immunisations you may require. Please click here to take you to our page on Travel Advice and Services

Please note that we do not provide vaccinations for the purpose of occupational health at this time. Please speak to your employer.


When you are pregnant you will receive regular care from a Doctor and Midwife before and after your baby is born.
  • Baby clinic: Appointments for postnatal, 6 week checks and immunisations are available with most GPs.
  • Health visitors: There are Health Visitors based at the Childrens' Centres in Brislington.

  • Midwives: They hold regular clinics at the health centre. If you think you are pregnant and need to arrange your first midwife appointment please call the Midwife Antenatal Booking team on 0117 3420850

Minor surgery

The Doctors are able to inject joints, freeze warts and remove skin lumps.

New patient checks

When you register for the practice you may be invited to attend the treatment room for a new patient health check.


A Doctor may refer you to see a Physiotherapist at the Health Centre for Musculoskeletal problems.

Podiatry (foot care)

If you have a problem with your feet, or an illness such as diabetes that can affect your feet, please contact reception for an appointment with the Podiatrist.

Repeat prescriptions

Repeat prescription requests can be made in person at the practice or on line once you have registered for Patient Online Access with the practice. Please click here for more information.

We do not accept prescription requests over the telephone for patient safety reasons.


The practice regularly takes part in medical research.

Your medical records may be used, but all personal details are removed.


The practice no longer offers stop smoking services. Please refer to the following NHS support website and/or speak to your local pharmacy. https://www.nhs.uk/smokefree

Test results

These can be given out over the telephone after 2.00pm.

Treatment Room

A team of nurses provide a range of services for minor injuries, wound care, immunisations, blood tests, health checks, blood pressure testing, cervical smears, ear syringing and travel clinics.
